Erosion Series (open 30 minutes before demo – by invitation only)
Pat Carroll – 9am to Noon
My name is Pat Carroll and I am passionate about woodturning! Based in the south east of Ireland on the North Wexford border at the foot of Sliabh Bhui mountain, I am surrounded by some of the most beautiful and picturesque countryside. There are many walks in the area and breath-taking views to adorn. I have been turning since 2002 and my main focus is creating hollow forms. This area of woodturning has always intrigued and interested me. Over the years I have explored many areas of this art/craft and love to experiment and enhance my pieces with colour, texture and additional mediums. I have demonstrated at local, national and international symposiums. My work is varied to suit all tastes, with commissions taken for gifts, weddings, corporate prizes or event trophies.
Description
In this demonstration, Pat Carroll will walk you through the steps in making his Erosion Series. Turned, carved, burned and rust effect added. He will walk you through timber selection, shape and form, patterns and designs, and more.
No Holiday Party – (open 30 minutes before demo – by invitation only)
Ed Pretty: 1:00 – 4pm
Hello, my name is Ed Pretty and among other things, I am a wood turner. I divide my work into commercial turning, artistic turning, teaching and demonstrating. I do a fair bit of production work for a few regular clients as well as one-off jobs for local furniture makers. I have limited my artistic work recently because something had to give time-wise, but I do maintain some pieces in the Circle Craft Gallery on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC.
Colouring Wood –
I’ve applied colour in various forms to my work since the early 1990’s. I discuss surface preparation, use of wood-compatible dyes, ebonizing, bleaching, fuming, liming – using both traditional lime wax and acrylic paint – and faux painting techniques.
My dye technique involves the use of only the primary colours – red, blue and yellow – and black. I show how these colours are applied to a piece separately rather than premixing colours to achieve spectacular effects on figured wood. I show how bleaching can be used to change the outcome or be used on its own.
I discuss different ways of ebonizing or darkening wood by applying an ebonizing fluid and fuming with ammonia.
I discuss and show the effects of various commercially available treatments like crackle glaze and faux metallic applications.
