Vice President’s Message:
November 2009

If you've visited the AWA website recently you may notice that things look a bit different. I spent about 20 hours over the last couple of weeks doing a refresh of the club website and updating the gallery software to version 2.3 The previous gallery software was verion 1.4.6, was nearly 5 years old, was beginning to show its age, and had problems with spam comments. I'm going to leave the old gallery intact until I'm satisfied that the new version is stable and that all of the images were tranferred over correctly. The new version will also allow us to grant members access to their own albums to edit the album and photo information. If you're interested in obtaining access to your gallery please contact me.

Buckeye held its second annual Buckeye Heritage Days event on Saturday and Sunday the 24th and 25th of October. The AWA had a booth and had 2 lathes running non-stop both days turning pens for the troops and various other turning demonstrations. The booth was very well received and numerous event attendees received a hands-on introduction to woodturning by turning a pen which was then donated to the Turning for the Troops project. Special thanks to Mike and Julie Pulliam, Jason Clark, Michael Costa, Mike Abels, Dale Gillaspy, Gary Scarpulla, Ken Lappegard, and Ana Lappegard for staffing the booth at this event.

Now that the upgrade is more or less complete and the Buckeye Heritage Days event has finished I can concentrate on upcoming events:
  • Saturday, November 7th is the Boyce Thompson Arboretum Tree ID walk led by Mike Lucckino. Mike will be guiding a small group of club members through Boyce Thompson Arboretum, stopping at various points along the trail to point out various trees and pointers on how to identify them.
  • Saturday, November 21st is the Molly Winton all day demo in Sun City from 9AM - 3PM. Entry is $10. For those unable to make this demo she will also be doing a demo on Sunday, November 22nd, at the Prescott Area Woodturners meeting. Entry at Prescott is $25 and includes lunch.
  • Saturday and Sunday, November 28th and 29th from 8AM - 4PM is the Boyce Thompson Arboretum Fall Foliage Finale. They have offered us a booth to be staffed by club members at this event to promote our club and our work. If you are interested in participating at this event please contact me.

For those that are interested, my daily woodturning blog continues to grow. Day 70 has come and gone and I'm still going strong. My blog it can be found at http://agoodturndaily.blogspot.com
